چکیده

We study the lubrication of fluid-immersed soft interfaces and show that elastic deformation couples tangential and normal forces and thus generates lift. We consider materials that deform easily, due to either geometry e.g., a shell or constitutive properties e.g., a gel or a rubber , so that the effects of pressure and temperature on the fluid properties may be neglected. Four different system geometries are considered: a rigid cylinder moving parallel to a soft layer coating a rigid substrate; a soft cylinder moving parallel to a rigid substrate; a cylindrical shell moving parallel to a rigid substrate; and finally a cylindrical conforming journal bearing coated with a thin soft layer. In addition, for the particular case of a soft layer coating a rigid substrate, we consider both elastic and poroelastic material responses. For all these cases, we find the same generic behavior: there is an optimal combination of geometric and material parameters that maximizes the dimensionless normal force as a function of the softness parameter =hydrodynamic pressure/elastic stiffness =surface deflection/gap thickness, which characterizes the fluid-induced deformation of the interface. The corresponding cases for a spherical slider are treated using scaling concepts. © 2005 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.1985467

A New Acceptance Sampling Plan Based on Cumulative Sums of Conforming Run-Lengths

In this article, a novel acceptance-sampling plan is proposed to decide whether to accept or reject a receiving batch of items. In this plan, the items in the receiving batch are inspected until a nonconforming item is found. When the sum of two consecutive values of the number of conforming items between two successive nonconforming items falls underneath of a lower control threshold, the batc...

Soft lubrication.

We consider some basic principles of fluid-induced lubrication at soft interfaces. In particular, we quantify how a soft substrate changes the geometry of and the forces between surfaces sliding past each other. By considering the model problem of a symmetric nonconforming contact moving tangentially to a thin elastic layer, we determine the normal force in the small and large deflection limit,...

Comparison of conforming and nonconforming retrieved glenoid components.

The purpose of this study was to compare differences in wear performance of conforming and nonconforming glenoid designs, using clinical, radiographic, and retrieved polyethylene glenoid component outcome Sixty-three glenoids met the study criteria, and each glenoid was assigned to the conforming group (if the radii of curvature of the humeral and glenoid components were identical) or the nonco...

Mesh Matching - Creating Conforming Interfaces between Hexahedral Meshes

This paper presents a new method for handling nonconforming hexahedral-to-hexahedral interfaces. One or both of the adjacent hexahedral meshes are locally modified to create a one-to-one mapping between between the mesh nodes and quadrilaterals at the interface allowing a conforming mesh to be created. In the finite element method, nonconforming interfaces are currently handled using constraint...

Elastohydrodynamics of a Worm Gear Contact

The paper is concerned with prediction of elastic contact and elastohydrodynamic film thickness in worm gears. Using the undeformed geometry of the gap between gear teeth in contact a three-dimensional elastic contact simulation technique has been developed for calculation of the true area of elastic contact under load relative to the wheel and worm surfaces. A parallel investigation of elastoh...
